July 14, 2009 Meeting Information

The regular meeting of the Villages Woodworkers Club will be on held on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Washington and Jefferson rooms at Laurel Manor.

Please bring your 'show and tell' item if you have completed something you are proud of and share it with us. We want to know how you did it!!! These items will be displayed for viewing prior to the meeting. We will be taking pictures of the Show and Tell crafts and displaying them in our Gallery on the VWC web site.

We strongly support the 'show-and-tell' part of our meeting. If you've made something recently, or even in the past, and would like to share it with us, please bring it. This is what our Club is all about.

The minutes from past VWC General and Board meetings can be found on the Club Documents page.

Attention!!!

I send out an e-mail to all members with an e-mail address the Friday before the meeting. If you are not getting the e-mail, it is either because I have no e-mail address for you or I have an incorrect e-mail address. If you are a member and are not getting the e-mail, please click on the E-Mail Address Correction button below and let me know so I can correct the database.

Please add the following entry to your address book so that the VWC emails do not end up in your Deleted file, Junk file or Spam file. The address is woodshopbulletins@embarqmail.com. The sender will be VWC Bulletins.

                          SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!
Monitor Training - Time Change

Please note that beginning June 3, all shop monitor training classes will happen on only the first and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Prior to this, training was available every Wednesday AM, but the inability to obtain and retain instructors for this function has made a reduction in times offered a necessity.

Through the summer, monitor training times are:
June 3 and 24, July 1 and 22, August 5 and 26, and September 2 and 23.
All times are Wednesdays from 9 – 10:30
.

As an aside, please don’t hesitate to see me if you would be willing to help in this important function. I really need a couple of people willing to be able to help me in doing the shop monitor training.

Thanks,
Wayne Hendricks

Certification Team Members Needed

As we approach our busiest time of year, we need to make a special appeal to members who have the interest and skill to become a part of the Instructional Certification Team. With many new members joining the Club, we may have to add additional certification sessions. Several members are carrying a heavy burden of responsibility for helping with the certification of new members and are doing an exceptional job. Many of us have the potential to share in this important process. If you are comfortable with sharing your knowledge with others, and feel that you could assist by being an instructor in the certification program, now is the time to step forward and make this important contribution to the Club. This also represents another way to serve your 12 hour per year obligation to the Club. So, if you have the interest and ability, we call upon you to serve in this role. You may do so by signing up on the special form at the desk at the Woodshop or by letting us know during our meeting on Tuesday, Jan 13th at Laurel Manor. If you have questions please contact Jack Tagye, Paul Greene, Murry Bishop or Charlie Shark. Thanks for your thoughtful consideration of this special request !

Thanks,
Charlie Shark

Monitors Needed

We are looking for anyone who still needs to work monitor hours for 2008, or anyone who is available who would like to pick up an extra shift. Please call the office at 751-0513 and sign up. We are short people for next week and several of the weeks following. We have exhausted the names on the sub list. It would be nice if we could get some new volunteers instead of asking the same list of individuals.

We put a note on the desk asking for people to sign up for next week, but as mentioned, there are other weeks that are in need of people.

We really need the help!!!

Thanks,
Charlie Shark

Help Wanted – Office Staff

The club is in need of permanent Office Staff for the front desk. This is a job that would require 4-8 hours per month of voluntary service. You will receive training before beginning. Many records are kept on the computer, so basic computer knowledge is helpful, especially knowledge of MS Word. (Involvement in office staffing relieves you of the Shop Monitor obligation.)

Office Staff are responsible for the following:

  • Receipt and recording of monies paid (membership, special projects, classes, etc.)
  • Enrollment in classes.
  • Handling of wood orders and payment for orders
  • Handling of special projects
  • Coordination of Shop Monitors Meet/Greet prospective members and visitors
  • Basic office functions such as filing, phone answering, taking messages, etc.

Direct any questions to Anne Bell or Heather Sawyer at villageswoodshop@embarqmail.com

Cutting Pressure Treated Wood Banned

Effectively immediately, the cutting of pressure-treated wood of any variety is prohibited in the Woodshop.

The air quality in the woodshop cannot be maintained when this material is used and the waste gets into the shop’s chip/dust retrieval system. All air used to remove sawdust and wood chips from the shop is circulated back into the shop and “fines” and vapors from the cutting of this wood enter the shop air causing respiratory problems for shop users.

How to Recognize a STROKE

Recognizing a Stroke

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .

Remember The first three letters .... S.T.R.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (I.E. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911 immediately, and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. Researchers are urging the general public to learn to ask these three questions quickly, to someone they suspect of having a stroke. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of a stroke, and prevent permanent brain damage.

COMCAST Users

If you are a COMCAST user and are currently getting your VWC Bulletins, please skip this section, unless you are curious. If you are a COMCAST user and are NOT getting your VWC Bulletins, please continue reading.

Emails from woodshopclub@embarqmail.com and woodshopbulletins@embarqmail.com are being screened as SPAM by Comcast. I know what the problem is but I am not having much luck with Comcast or Embarqmail as to a suitable solution.

I am sorry if this note sounds technical but I have not been able to make it any clearer.

You have a setting in the Comcast webmail client that will prevent SPAM from getting to you when using Comcast's mail function. It does not matter if you are using an Email client on your PC. Comcast uses the webmail settings to screen the email that transverses through their mail servers.

To check or change the setting, you will need to sign into Comcast (www.comcast.net) and go to the Email page. If you do not remember your Comcast password, this could be a little dicey. You will have to call or email Comcast and have them issue you a new password. If you use an email client at your PC, you will have to go into the Account settings of your email client and change the password in the Comcast account to the new password.

After you sign into Comcast and get to the Email page, look on the left hand side down near the bottom for the word Preferences. Click on it.

In your Preferences, there is a setting for Spam Filters. Click on it. You will have to reenter your password to continue. If you have it set to Prevent SPAM from entering my INBOX (default) and do not select Keep a local copy in my Screened mail folder in Webmail (default), all SPAM is immediately deleted. If you select Keep a local copy in my Screened mail folder in Webmail, then all SPAM (including the VWC messages) should be in your Screened folder. Messages in the Screened folder are kept three days by default and then deleted.

I have a workaround to the problem at this time:

The easiest workaround is to click on the Do not filter spam button and let all of the messages go into your Inbox or to your Email client on your PC. Be sure to click on Update to change the setting. However, doing this would result in all of the SPAM that Comcast is filtering to go to your Inbox and/or PC email client. This might not be a good thing depending on the amount of Spam you receive. But then, you might find other messages in there that are legitimate messages.

If you have Comcast set to Prevent SPAM from entering my INBOX and you have NOT selected Keep a local copy in my Screened mail folder in Webmail, I would suggest clicking on the Keep a local copy in my Screened mail folder in Webmail, click on Update and periodically sign into the Comcast Webmail to see what email Comcast is filtering before you make any decision to change to the Do not filter Spam on not.

As I mentioned, the screened messages will be kept for three days before being automatically deleted. You can go into Preferences and click on Scheduled Email Deletion and change the number of days to save the Screened messages to 7 or 30 days and click on the Save button at the bottom of the screen so that you have a longer period of time to check your messages.

In order to process the VWC Bulletins (and any other mail in the Screened folder that you really want), you will have to occasionally sign into the Comcast Webmail client, go into the Screened folder and move the VWC Bulletins (and other items) to the INBOX. The easiest way to do this is to select all of the VWC Bulletins (and other items) by clicking on the box to the left of the messages and then click on the down arrow next to the Move to Folder entry and click on Inbox. If you are using an Email client on your PC they will be delivered to your PC at the next Send/Receive cycle. If you are using the Comcast webmail function, they will now be in your inbox where you can do what you normally do with the messages.

If you decide to not go to the Do not filter Spam option, I would suggest that you change the Screened messages to not delete the messages for 7 or 30 days and periodically perform the above mentioned task to get the good emails out of the Screened folder.

I know this sounds a little convoluted but this is the best I can do for you at the moment.

I am still working with COMCAST and Embarqmail to see what I can do about getting these marked as regular mail. If you have ever dealt with Comcast or Embarq on a problem, you know how frustrating this can be.

I hope this is a satisfactory explanation.

If you have any questions or problems with this solution, please let me know.

Thanks,
Bill Provencher
