Course Title:    Introduction to Pyrography for Turned Work Decoration.

Course Number:    Course 131

Instructor:    Ron Gammon

Course Description:

An introductory course in decorating techniques for turned or flat projects.  More specifically, the use of Pyrography (Wood burning) to enhance an average looking piece into something 'special'.  You will be introduced to and experience methods to accomplish this task.

Skills and knowledge to be gained:

1        Application of techniques to add more decorative touches to your projects beyond sanding and the usual ‘surface only’ types of coatings.

2        Selection and use of suitable equipment to perform these techniques.

3        Selection and preparation of raw stock to attain best results.

4        Decision making ideas to help in selecting the most suitable type of decorative enhancement.

5        Encouragement to be creative in developing new ways to enhance the appearance of your projects

Machines and tools to be used:

A variety of Pyrography equipment may be used to create the desired enhancement.

Learning process/procedure:

The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Steps will be suggested and demonstrated by the instructor.  The student will then begin by following the steps as demonstrated, with close supervision by the instructor.  The student will be given a simple task to perform at first, and when done to the instructor's satisfaction, the student may begin the application of Pyrography on their work piece.

Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:

This is an intermediate level course and as such requires prior competency in the use of the shop lathes. Participants are to report to class with two turned or flat pieces ready for decorating.

If the piece is a bowl or platter, the tenon must still be intact so mounting back into the chuck is possible.

Project/product to be made:

The aim will be to complete one or more decoratively enhanced pieces by the end of the course.

Duration of course:

Three sessions, each of one and a half hours duration, taken over 3 consecutive weeks.

Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:

There will be no additional charge for materials.
