Description:
This is an introductory
course on working on a lathe to produce a pepper and/or salt mill. Students will design, turn, finish and
assemble a working pepper and/or salt mill.
On completion, the students will be able to make future pepper and salt
mills using their own resources.
Skills and
Knowledge to be gained:
Ø Selection and preparation of stock for turning
pepper or salt mills.
Ø Mounting of the stock between centers and reversing
the stock several times.
Ø Using a Jacobs Chuck and Forstner Bits for drilling
of the stock.
Ø How to design a Story Board and transfer it to your
stock.
Ø The turning of the parts required to assemble a
completed peppermill.
Ø Finishes to be applied on, and off, the lathe.
Ø Assembly of completed project.
Machines and
Tools to be used:
1.
A variety of
machines, and tools, will be used to prepare stock, including the Lathe, Band
Saw, Jacobs Chuck, Forstner Bits and Jigs.
Learning
Process/Procedure:
The learning process will be
a Hand-On experience. Steps will be
demonstrated by the instructor and students will follow suit, with assistance
being provided as needed, to assist in the creation of your designer pepper
and/or salt mill.
Prerequisite
skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful
participation:
This is an intermediate
level course. And as such, requires that
the students have prior experience of lathe turning. Ideally, they will have successfully taken
the Workshop Course and Basic Spindle Turning.
Alternatively, they will have gained experience in turning elsewhere and
be confident at working with spindle type projects.
Project/product
to be made:
The goal will be to create a
10 inch Deluxe Pepper and/or salt mill of your own design.
Duration of
course:
There will be three, two
hour sessions, taken over three consecutive weeks.
Cost of materials
beyond the basic $10 fee:
There will be an additional
charge for materials of $25 per mill to cover the cost of the pepper and/or
salt mill grinding system, stock and finishing materials.
