Description:
An
introductory course to wood carving, tools and techniques used and project
planning.
Skills and knowledge to be gained:

The fundamentals of wood carving, including:-
·
Cutting with the grain.
·
Cutting across the grain.
·
Making a stop cut.
·
(Possibly) the correct techniques to use to sharpen
and maintain basic carving tools.
Machines and tools to be used:
The main tool will be a straight blade carving knife.
Learning process/procedure:
The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Participants will
carve a project from a prepared block of wood provided for them and will
proceed to prepare a second blank for a carving of their own choice.
Prerequisite skills; what level of
competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:
This is an
introductory course and as such requires no prior experience. A desire to
become involved with and to learn more about carving would of course be a great
asset.
Project/product to be made:
The initial
project will be a Snowman carved from a blank supplied by the instructor.
Duration of course:
Four, two-hour
sessions taken over 4 consecutive weeks.
Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There will
be an additional charge for materials of $20 to cover the cost of the blanks
and personal knives.
