Description:
An intermediate
course in Router Operations. This course requires some prior experience beyond
the VWC Orientation Class and a strong desire to become more familiar with the
safe usage of the power router(s). It will consist of four, two hour sessions
taken over consecutive weeks, with a fifth class being optional should it be
required.
Skills and knowledge to be gained:

The course aims to make the student more conversant
with routers and associated power tools along with their wider potential within
safe workshop practice.

Recognition of the function and uses of various workshop
routers and router bits.
·
Safe user practice of these power tools.
·
Understanding of general workshop safe practices as
they apply to router usage, including vacuuming and filter mask for personal
protection.
·
Ability to choose the best techniques for the job in
hand.
·
An understanding of the various basic techniques to
use to achieve maximum benefit from the router as applied to a particular
application, and an ability to choose from these the best techniques for the
job in hand.
Machines and tools to be used:
Emphasis for the course will be on the router power tools found and used
in the workshop.
Learning process/procedure:
The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Participants will receive
demonstrations of how routers may be safely and correctly used to produce an
alternative form of ‘hollowed out’ bowl or platter to that which is applied in
lathe turned bowls or platters. The demonstrations will be followed by
participants having time to practice using the machines themselves. A course
project will be completed by each student. This will consist of
shrimp/dipping/appetizer bowl using suitable templates. Note taking will be a
requirement.
Prerequisite skills; what level of
competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:
This is an
intermediate course and as such requires prior experience beyond the VWC
orientation class. Students should have
either successfully completed the basic router course or they will require a
personal qualification by a suitable router instructor before being accepted
for this class. A desire to become more familiar with the power router would of
course be a great asset.
Project/product to be made:
A course project will be completed by each student. This will consist of
shrimp/dipping/appetizer bowl using suitable templates
Duration of course:
Four, two-hour
sessions taken over 3 consecutive weeks with an optional fifth class as
required.
Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There will
be an additional charge to cover project materials. Students will be required
to purchase and bring with them a suitable piece of poplar measuring 1 inch x 8
inches x 5 feet. This can be obtained from the workshop store.
