Completion
of a project of choice using all suitable workshop equipment and techniques.
Skills and knowledge to be gained:

Creation and use of project drawings.
·
Selection of appropriate materials for the chosen
project.
·
Ability to create a list of hardware and supplies to
be needed for the project in hand.
·
Determination of which tools and machines will be
required to complete the project.
·
Ability to layout, cut and form the parts required
to complete the work.
·
Cutting and formation of suitable joints.
·
How to logically assemble the finished project.
·
How to choose suitable finishes, their application
and any alternatives that may have been employed instead.
Machines and tools to be used:
Any of the tools and machines that were introduced during the workshop
certification course may be employed. These could include the jointer, planer,
table saw, cut-off saw, sanders and drill press. However, other machines and
tools may also be considered where their use would be appropriate to the chosen
project.
Learning process/procedure:
The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Participants will engage
in various cutting and preparation techniques to complete the construction of a
suitable project agreed in conjunction with the instructor. Demonstration and
assistance will be available throughout to ensure that students acquire the
most from their experiences. Emphasis upon safe use and handling of all
materials and equipment will be paramount throughout the course.
Prerequisite skills; what level of
competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:
This is an
introductory level course and as such requires no prior experience beyond the
VWC orientation class. However, participants should ideally posses a
rudimentary understanding of the intended purposes of basic woodworking
machines and equipment as well as the principles of shop safety as demonstrated
by their successful completion of the Certification Program.
Project/product to be made:
Students on
the course will construct a project of their own choosing within the limits set
by their instructor to allow for realistic completion in the time available and
skills and prior knowledge of the participant.
Duration of course:
Four, three-hour
sessions taken over consecutive weeks.
Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There will
be an additional charge to cover the materials used during the course based
upon actual costs.
