Course Title:    Finishing Techniques.

Course Description:   

Introduction on how to plan and execute the correct finish for a project in the workshop.

Skills and knowledge to be gained:  

·       Understanding of the various alternative ways and materials to use in achieving a suitable finish to a project.

·       Learning how to apply the chosen finish based on an analysis of the type of wood, its condition and possible future use.

·       Preparation of the surface using proper sanding techniques and materials.

·       Differences between stains, dyes, sealers, fillers and other coatings.

·       Methods of application of the chosen finishes.

Machines and tools to be used:

Hand held sanders and other, suitable power tools may be used if appropriate.

Learning process/procedure:

The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Participants will usually provide a chosen raw-wood piece that requires a suitable finish. This will then become the focus for their learning experience in respect to obtaining a desired result.

Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:  

None besides a desire to obtain the best, most outstanding finish possible to a wood project that the participant has completed to the pre-finish stage already.

Project/product to be made: 

This class is not designed with any specific project in mind. The correct finish for any suitable project can be included.

Duration of course: 

This will vary according to the complexity and nature of the finish or finishes under consideration and is by negotiation between the student and the instructor.

Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee: 

There will be no additional charge.
