Description:
An
intermediate course in the art form of Intarsia. (Wood inlays using different
types and colors of wood to form pictures and designs).
Skills
and knowledge to be gained:

The
fundamentals of Intarsia techniques beyond the most basic.
·
An
ability to identify and select woods recognized by their colors and grain
patterns.
·
Selection
of woods to assist in the composition of a picture or design.
·
Cutting
of intricate shapes by following traced patterns using a scroll saw.
·
Operation
of a suitable sander.
·
The
assembly of the project to form the chosen picture or design.
·
Application
of a suitable finish.
Machines
and tools to be used:
The
main tools will be the scroll saw, disc and drum sanders.
Learning
process/procedure:
The
class will begin by familiarizing participants with the color and grain
characteristics of various woods. Pattern parts will be traced onto selected
woods and the intricate parts will be cut out and sanded to size to then be
assembled to complete your final project piece. The piece will then be
completed by the application of a suitable finish.
Prerequisite
skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful
participation:
An
ability to cut intricate shaped pieces using a scroll saw. Preferably students
will have completed an introductory course to the art of intarsia prior to
signing up for this course, or will have some previous knowledge and
understanding of the process.
Project/product
to be made:
The
initial project will be a flying goose.
Duration
of course:
Five
two-hour sessions taken over consecutive
weeks.
Cost
of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:
There
may be an additional charge for materials to be determined as appropriate.
