Course Number:    Course 521

Course Description:

This is an ‘open’ class available to anyone wishing to explore the art of scale model boat constructions.

·       How to choose suitable vessel designs to interpret as a scale model.

·       Choice of appropriate scales to construct the model boat.

·       Selection of suitable materials for use in the model’s construction.

·       Consideration of the various options open to the construction of a scale model. For example, solid versus ‘hollow’ hull; simulated versus actual planking, etc.

·       Finishing details of the model.

·       Display considerations for the finished craft.

Machines and tools to be used:

The course will employ the use of multiple tools found in the workshop.

Learning process/procedure:

The learning process will be a hands-on experience. Starting with a discussion about suitable types of boats that might lend themselves to being rendered as scale models, through the interpretation of drawings and plans to the cutting, assembling and finishing of the parts to complete the chosen vessel.

Prerequisite skills; what level of competency/expertise is required for safe, successful participation:

There are no pre-required skills or experience beyond a desire to create a workman like scale model that reflects accurately the true nature of a full-sized vessel.

Project/product to be made:

The finished project will be an accurate scale model of a chosen boat or marine vessel.

Duration of course:

This is an ‘open’ course in the respect that anyone wishing to follow it should see the named instructor who will schedule their help on request. Assistance with the course will usually be given by prior arrangement at the workshop. The assistance and help with the on-going project will continue until the model is completed. It should be noted that this may take from several weeks to several months depending on the complexity of the chosen vessel and the type of construction adopted.

Cost of materials beyond the basic $10 fee:

There will be an additional charge for materials to be determined by the nature of the model chosen and the types of materials incorporated into its construction. There will be very few personal tools that you will require, but it would be advantageous to own an ‘Exacto’ craft knife set and some artist quality small brushes

Before signing up for this courses, would you please try to check with your calendar to make sure that you will be free and able to attend for all of the possible necessary sessions that may be required for the completion of a model of this nature. Many Thanks.
