Here is a mixed media table made from Goncalo alves (see below) and aluminum. The top was made from two 4X36" boards joined and the bottom is welded aluminum and powder coated.

Goncalo alves:

Characteristics: This exotic and imported hardwood is light golden-brown to reddish-brown with blackish-brown streaks and spots similar to rosewood. The grain is irregular and interlocked with alternating layers of hard and soft material. The wood has medium texture and luster and is hard and heavy. Goncalo Alves is very durable.

Common Uses: Goncalo Alves is used in boat building - furniture - cabinetry - flooring - veneer and knife handles.

Working Properties: Very difficult to work. Tools must be kept sharp. Pre-boring is necessary. It screws well, glues easily and finishes with a high natural polish. It turns well.

Tree is Native To: Guyana, Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Trinidad and Brazil

I finally received and installed the beveled glass and mirror to finish the cherry china hutch. I had one inch rough cherry that I ripped and planed using the shop table saw and planer. I mitered the crown moulding using my compound miter saw, router for the base top edge and floor moulding along with other various hand tools. I assembled, stained, and lacquered the hutch in my garage. With help from the neighbors, I moved it into the house in two sections, bottom base and top. I was a fun project to complete. I am currently working on a new larger cherry table top for our dining room table.

This project idea came from the DIY show Woodworks hosted by David Marks. After meeting him at a class he taught in Orlando, I was encouraged to try this piece. The main challenges were the angles from the pyramid shape, the cove molding cut on the table saw and the drawer handles cut on the lathe. My special thanks to John Justice for helping me cut the mitres on the cove molding. He is a truly great resource. All the wood was ordered through the woodshop (Thanks Murry) and was very nice quality. The veneer pieces for the sides, back and top I made myself in my vacuum press, so the top is very uniform as both the veneer and the banding pieces were from the same board. This is a wonderful piece of furniture; my wife is ecstatic so it is truly a big success.

This project started with seeing this wine cabinet in a catalog. The piece had been discontinued, so ingenuity had to take over and build from just a picture. I was able to use four different joints; pocket screws, loose tenons, biscuits and rabbets. I ran out of walnut as I was about to make the lower doors, but had a piece of ambrosia maple laying around so used that for the panels. They looked so great I used it for the wine rack and the drawer front. The finish is Daly's Profin with water based polyurethane on the surfaces which might get damp. A very satisfying project to do, use and show..
